My doctor ordered a CAT and an MRI. But what’s the difference?

The two studies are used as diagnostic tools. They are often used as tools to plan surgery. But what are the differences between the two studies?

Frequently in orthopedics we use imaging studies to complement our diagnosis and to make a good planning of a surgery, but often when we have to undergo some medical tests we find that we do not know very well what they consist of.

    What is CAT?

The CAT (computed axial tomography) is a scanner-like piece of equipment that uses radiation (X-rays). Using this technique, photograph-like images of our body from different angles are obtained. This system can be studied in more depth different parts of the body, helping to detect tumors or infections, in addition to visualizing in detail organs such as the lungs, liver or kidneys, among others. In Orthopedics it is a very useful tool as it helps us to correctly assess the bones to offer the best treatment option.

The radiation that the patient receives is controlled and in small amounts, so the risk of cancer as a result of this test according to experts is minimal. It is a study that is usually quick 10-15 minutes.

    What is an MRI?

MRI gets the images using magnetic fields, magnets, and waves. This allows you to see precisely, for example, the soft tissues that cover it.

It is frequently used to evaluate joint or spinal injuries, sports injuries such as muscle tears and ligament ruptures. The MRI does not emit radiation, so it is harmless. The MRI study is contraindicated in patients who have pacemakers or metal implants.

The performance of an MRI study is longer, the complete test is performed between 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area to be studied. There are open MRIs for patients suffering from claustrophobia.
