I am often asked in the consultation if osteoporosis produces symptoms or what its symptoms are.

Symptoms of osteoporosis may be unnoticeable at first and slowly worsen over time. As the disease progresses, bone fractures, painful joints, and sometimes a reduction in height may arise.

    What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become brittle and prone to fractures due to decreased bone density.

    Risk factors for osteoporosis

    Risk factors for osteoporosis include:

    • Elderly.
    • Menopause (in women).
    • Diet low in calcium.
    • Lack of exercise.
    • Excessive alcohol consumption.
    • Smoking.
    • Family history of the disease.

    Complications of osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects the bones, causing them to become brittle and break easily. The complications of osteoporosis can be very serious, even deadly.

Some of the most common complications of osteoporosis are:

    • Fractures: A fracture occurs when a bone breaks. Hip, wrist and back fractures are the most common fractures in people with osteoporosis.
    • Pain: Pain is the main symptom of osteoporosis. It can be very intense and limit people’s ability to perform daily activities.
    • Immobility: Due to pain and fractures, many people with osteoporosis are forced to reduce their physical activity, which can lead to immobility.
    • Depression: Osteoporosis can be very debilitating and lead to depression in many people.

    Complications associated with osteoporosis

Loss of Bone Mass and Bone Density

In osteoporosis, there is an imbalance between absorption and bone formation, which leads to a decrease in bone mass, thus increasing the chances of fractures. Being a condition that weakens the bones, osteoporosis can cause complications such as: chronic pain, disability, and loss of mobility.

    Osteoporotic Fractures

Osteoporosis fractures are defined as fractures that occur due to significant bone weakness, even as a result of minor or unexplained injuries.

The most common fractures related to osteoporosis are

    • Hip fractures.
    • Spinal fractures.
    • Wrist fractures.

    Treatment for osteoporosis fractures

Treatment for osteoporosis fractures can range from rest, pain medication, and physical therapy, to surgical procedures to stabilize the fractured bone. It is important to note that the type of treatment to be used will depend on the particular needs of each patient.

    Treatment of osteoporosis

Treatment of osteoporosis is very important. If you have osteoporosis, it’s important to make a number of lifestyle changes to improve your bone health and reduce your risk of fractures. These changes include:

    • Exercise regularly: Exercise helps improve bone density and muscle strength, which reduces the risk of fractures. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 15 minutes of vigorous exercise each day. You can also do strengthening exercises, such as lifting weights, two or three times a week.
    • Eat a healthy diet: Nutrition plays an important role in bone health. Be sure to get plenty of calcium and vitamin D to keep your bones strong. Other vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins C and K, are also important.

    Osteoporosis-Related Quality of Life

The quality of life of people with osteoporosis can be affected by chronic pain, disability resulting from fractures, and the need to adapt to a more careful lifestyle to prevent further bone injury. In this sense, it is recommended to provide emotional and physical support to people living with this disease to improve their general well-being.
